Classic black scuba, one of the ongoing trending fashion fabrics for fall/winter, uses similar methods used in wetsuits but in fabrics and weights that are right for garments. Light weight black knit is bonded to a thin layer of foam on both sides (both sides are the same black knit fabric), giving the fabric a soft loft and structural quality, lightly crisp and malleable with an appealing smooth surface. This is a mid weight scuba with a bit of crosswise stretch and no rolling at the cut edge. Scuba is a snap to sew, no hems or seam finishes required and you can choose to serge or sew a conventional seam. I'd call this a jacket/coat/vest weight, but designers are using scuba in unexpected ways, for skirts, pants and dresses as well. Scuba adds sculpture and volume to garments. The centerpiece garment at the recent Met Exhibition, Manus x Machina was a wedding dress in scuba designed by Karl Lagerfeld combining hand and machine stitching expertise...see my photos as well as pattern suggestions.
