From India where hand made textile traditions continue. Pieced silk patchwork is sewn together, then overdyed black, which adds a wash of color that blends the silk pieces into a harmonious darker color way while allowing the original colors to show through. Reverses to a soft cotton on the back side, and the layers are hand stitched together in a running stitch using different colors of cotton thread. The selvedge edge and ends are hand stitched/finished as well, so you could use as a design element The fabric is made by hand in 10-12 yard pieces - let us know if you want one entire piece for a project. Has an appealing muted gleam and silky smooth hand, soft to the touch, light drape, really beautiful. Right for garments, accessories and home decor. You could use this for a jacket, coat, vest, skirt or dress.
Gwen sewed Butterick 6422 using this fabric in another color way, showing a perfect pairing - see photo below. She bound the edges using the printed back side, removed the stitching, cut the strips on the bias, sewed one side on the machine, hand sewed the other - and she finished the seams using a hong kong finish.
I love working with my supplier, a woman, who is carrying on her family tradition in the fabric business. She lives in the US, goes back and forth to the factory, and is always coming up with new concepts, colors and designs for traditional Indian fabrics. The fabrics are made to order in India, and are shipped directly to us from there. These fabrics have a beauty and integrity that reflect the presence of the hands that made them.
