A new Kantha cotton collection just arrived featuring new over-dyed colors. Each group varies because the fabric is hand made - sewn, dyed and produced to order in small quantities in artisan workshops - usually made by women in their homes. Imperfections are part of the hand made beauty of these fabrics, from India where hand made textile traditions continue.
Muted color saturated forest green. Two layers of shirting weight cotton, a print on one side, solid color on the reverse, are over-dyed, then hand stitched together in a running stitch using chunky cotton thread. The selvedge edge and ends are hand stitched/finished as well, so you could use as a design element. Over-dying blends and mutes the colors in the print, like a watercolor wash. The fabric is made by hand in 10-12 yard pieces - let us know if you want one entire piece for a project. Has a smooth hand, very soft to the touch, light drape, really beautiful. Right for garments, accessories and home decor. Katherine took a cut, replicated the selvedge stitching on both ends, and it is the ideal nap/TV throw. I made a jacket using Vogue 9287 using scraps of different leftover bits of kantha and it makes a perfect transitional layer, so soft and cozy.
I love working with my supplier, a woman, who is carrying on her family tradition in the fabric business. She lives in the US, goes back and forth to the factory, and is always coming up with new concepts, colors and designs for traditional Indian fabrics. The fabrics are made to order in India, and are shipped directly to us from there. These fabrics have a beauty and integrity that reflect the presence of the hands that made them.
