KATHERINE'S ELLSWORTH SHIRT IN BLACK HANKY LINEN

KATHERINE SAYS:

The Ellsworth Shirt is a simple, flattering shirt that I will wear all summer. The pattern itself runs larger than I wanted so I cut this version smaller and longer, while simplifying and lengthening the sleeves.

Notes and changes made to the pattern:

  • Black hanky linen was machine washed and dried. The finished shirt will no longer go in the dryer and will be worn purposely wrinkled.
  • I cut two sizes smaller than my normal size. Paper fit the front and back to determine which size pattern will give you the look you want.
  • Added 8” in length, shifting the side openings down on the pattern.
  • Added 3” in length to the center front, grading up to the side. This adjusted the front length to make accommodation for a full bust and tummy.
  • Added 1” to the sleeve length.
  • Cut 4 sleeve cuffs and used them to make a simple turn back cuff with a slit.
  • Added an extra 1½” band down the front. ...READ MORE ON THE BLOG

B6771 in American Beauty Cotton

fabric

b6771

katherine's notes on B6771

Such a good thing when the fabric tells you what it wants. American Beauty Italian Cotton Woven did just that. Three different stripes arriving from three different angles in three different colors along with that beautiful bouquet of roses was just too fabulous to miss. I work intuitively when planning how to cut each pattern piece when using a print, especially one like this that has so many options. The stripes would work best by my face rather than the flowers so I laid things out accordingly.

Butterick 6771 is one of my favorite patterns to make. It’s great in a solid while offering numerous design options for combinations of prints, patterns and/or textures. I’m all in with shirts these days.

Pattern tweaks:
Added a pattern piece for a simple fold back cuff with a slit.
Snuck in a pocket on each side: one pocket in the left front, suspended within the side panel
another pocket the in the right front, ending at the band seam.

NEW WORKWEAR COLLECTION

Marcy's notes on the Merchant & Mills Foreman Jacket

Carol on our ArtBarn team made The Foreman Jacket in wool which inspired me to make my own version.

To nail the fit I compared the paper pattern measurements to 2 favorite jackets in my closet for chest, hip, length and made the pattern alterations. Waited to cut the sleeve until the body was complete.

The fabric is our extra wide Flax Linen which has a cool selvedge, so I used that for details on the pocket and center back.

Changed the shape of the lower edge from round to square, changed the front facing to match, changed the shape of the pockets, made a lapped seam at center back using the selvedge.

The topstitching uses two threads and a topstitching needle (essential). I tested for stitch length. Used the double thread for the buttonholes, again, testing for length and spacing.

As shown here it is pressed, but when wearing it will become naturally rumpled, a good thing in a work jacket. I did not pre-wash the linen, but will launder cold, hang wet and air dry.

B6283 line drawing

Katherine Tilton's B6283 is a cool little A-line shift dress with an asymmetrical neckline, in seam pockets and sculptural tucks. Shown here in Blue Streak cotton. Easy to sew, it works in a variety of fabrics including knits - and makes a great T-shirt or tunic if shortened.

V1733

the soft drape pant

My best selling Pant V1731 is a 'sleeper', it has been in the pattern book for many years. On the pattern envelope I used washed linen and soft denim, but there are many more options to consider. See some of my choices in the Soft Pant Collection.

Taking a cue from RTW, the pant uses a lining fabric, Black Mini Dot Lining, which has just the right drape for this soft pant and makes a great basic.

The pant works well with both knits and wovens. If you want the pant to hang close to the body, choose a soft drapey fabric like rayon, silk or jersey.

If you want a more sculptural effect, you could use linen, denim or ponte.

Before you cut, determine the best size and length. The pattern runs large, so consider going down a size or two. Measure the pant at the hip and compare with your hip measurement and adjust before you cut as well as fitting as you sew. To eliminate some of the fullness, take in at the center back seam. To help determine the length, measure a favorite similar pant.
